Suggestions needed

B, SYT, and I are going on our first family vacation getaway over Labor Day weekend and we need your help.  Due to some family confusion last year, we ended up with plane tickets to Charleston, SC that we never used and, since it would cost over $300 to change the tickets, we've decided to take a long weekend getaway.  We have free plane tickets, a free hotel room (thank you, AmEx and Hilton Honors!), and now we need things to do and places to eat!
So, how many of you have been to Charleston?  What are the "must dos"?  And what were your favorite places to eat?  Remember, we will have a 3 1/2 month old with us, so nothing too fancy or loud if possible.  We'll probably eat dinner relatively early in order to keep him on some semblance of a schedule, but I doubt any 5 star restaurant is going to want a little guy as the entertainment of the evening (no matter how entertaining he is!)

We would love any advice you have!!  Thanks in advance!

  1. ohmygosh. I LOVE Charleston. Love. We've been there 3 times in the last few years, and there's plenty to keep you busy!

Here are a few of my favorite restaurants:
Morgan's Creek Grill (on Isle of Palms - about 30 min away): http://www.morgancreekgrill.com/ --- the best is the casual area on top of the roof, overlooking the inner-coastal waterway.

    Mustard Seed: http://www.dinewithsal.com/mustard
    Magnolia's restaurant is amazingly delicious.

We went to Kiawah Island for our honeymoon, which is about 45 minutes away from Charleston. Your husband would love the golf courses there. There's fun shopping in the little area leading into the island too. Angel Oak is a beautiful site.

Beyond that, just exploring the city of Charleston is fun. King's Street has great shopping. There's supposed to be a neat gallery/art section, but we never found it. I've always wanted to do a real tour, or ghost tour, but we never ended up doing it. We usually went to the beach at Isle of Palms.

Let me know if you have any questions!! You'll have a blast!

  5. Even though I'm from Michigan, my husband and I got married in Charleston, SC because it's our absolute favorite place. The best restaurant there by far is McCrady's, but probably not the best when you have a baby with you. For child friendly options with amazing low-country food I'd recommend Magnolia, High Cotton, and Anson (all for lunches or early dinners) and Hominy Grill (for breakfast). Make sure you walk down and see Rainbow Row and the Battery. I'd also recommend visiting Magnolia Plantation and Boone Hall Plantation if you're willing to venture out of downtown Charleston. The College of Charleston's campus is also very pretty to walk around. For your hubby, make sure you visit Ben Silver on King Street for the absolute best, preppy, men's clothing. Have a great trip!

  6. Lisa and I went last summer for a southern road trip and we had brunch at Magnolia - W O W. PLEASE go but you HAVE to get the fried green tomato appetizer. This might be one of the best things I have ever put in my mouth.

    That's what she said.

  7. I love Charleston. We just got back a couple of weeks ago from a vacation on Seabrook Island. We spent a day in Charleston and could've spent lots more time. We loved the aquarium, the harbour and fountains, lunch at Aaron's Deli, Rainbow Row, Battery Park, and the Sugar Bakery. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun.
