Freezing legs- help me please!!

Okay, at what point on the temperature scale are you allowed to wear pants to church rather than a skirt or dress? I've definitely always been the "dress up" for church girl- definitely brought on by my very strict dress code mom. However, we went to church on Sunday, and it was only 13 degrees, and my legs were FREEZING outside and not much warmer inside.  (Yes, I was wearing nylons that were thin (pre-pregnancy tights are no longer fitting) however, tights are not THAT much warmer!!)

I definitely love to wear dresses in the summer- mostly because I own tons of darling sundresses/Lilly dresses that are fun to wear.  I do have quite a few winter dresses and skirts that I have for work attire, so it's not the lack of them that is making me question this.  However, churches are often large with huge soaring ceilings and therefore do not warm up well, especially here in the frozen tundra.  Many, many other people wear jeans to church, and while this is not something I will ever do (my mother's voice would be nagging me the whole service), are dress pants appropriate?  What about leggings with a really cute tunic or longer top?

So, my fashionable and God fearing readers, I'm asking you to let me know what "appropriate" church attire is in the winter and at what temperature do you just give up and put the warmest thing on you own, praying that God realizes that you want to worship him however you can't do it if your teeth are chattering??  Thanks!  Mwah!!!

  1. Growing up I lived down the street from our church. My sister now lives on the property where I greW up. on the day after Christmas it was snowing something fierce in the Chicago area. I was wearing a skirt and a pair of tights. We were going to the church because my nephew was being baptized. Everyone else(of the women) was in pants. I wish I had been but I was the godmother and wanted to look nice.
I think that it depends upons how comfortable you are in pants. I know that some people have shown up in jeans to the church.

  2. Growing up in Dallas, we never really had to deal with the frigid temps, but I can say that I have worn pants to church all my life. Down here (at our church) it is completely ok to wear pants anytime of the year. Hope you are feeling good!

  3. I recently purchased some thicker tights and they are a Godsend (hehe, pun intended). The windchill in Chicago today was close to 0 and not once did I notice that my legs were about to fall off because I was wearing my thicker tights! Good luck!

  4. Not sure if you want to hear this, but here goes. It is always in good taste for a woman or girl to wear a dress to church. I suppose it depends on the church and religion, but it really is, I think, up to you. If you would feel completely at ease wearing dress slacks then do it. In my church, however, I have NEVER seen a woman wearing pants, nice or otherwise. I say buy some nice cotton knit or wool blend tights, or wear a pair of inconspicuous leggings under a longer skirt or dress that wont show. Let me also say that the further along you get being cold is not an issue. At least for me it wasn't. I was always running on the warmer side when I was pregnant, so a nice cool breeze was always appreciated. I do think 13 degrees might be pushing that though.

  6. I have very strict personal code of only wearing dresses to Mass. I would feel completely uncomfortable in anything else - although I see people in sweatpants! :o

I live in MI although SE so its quite a bit warmer - although DEFINITELY NOT warm - and I tough it out every Sunday.

  7. I too have the "wear your best" to church dress code handed down from Mom, Grandma, Granny....However, in MI, I do wear dress pants in winter w/a blazer or dressed up cardigan. NEVER jeans or khakis - too casual, but I guess it depends on what the dress code is and what you are comfortable wearing for worship. I don't think Jesus cares what we wear!

  8. First off, pregnancy exempts you from whatever fashion rules you lived by. When pregnant, it no longer is about you but what is best for your baby, and if that means warm legs for mom, then wear pants.
Secondly, God doesn't care what you're wearing in church. He just cares that you're there and have an open heart.
Finally, as a WI girl, I'd have to go with any temp lower than the 20s or windchills below the 20s probably calls for dress pants (hididng the nylons, tights or long underwear). Growing up, my mom made us dress nicely for church. But I've outgrown that (see #2). Now it's nice pants if I'm coming from work and jeans if I'm not. Most women at my church wear pants when it's cold. If you want to still wear dresses and skirts if the cold, invest in a long dress coat and cute warm boots.

  9. I wear dress pants to church about 50% of the time. In winter I'll sometimes wear longer wool skirts (tartan!). People wear jeans to mass here too, but I just can't bring myself to do it.

  10. I would say if you live anywhere that gets freezing that it's ok to wear dress pants in the winter. I know that I'm going through that now being in Kansas. I'm like you I always dress up whenever its just unbearable not to wear a dress or skirt then pants it is.

  11. I agree with the pregnant comment. Make that your excuse to wear pants if it's not your norm. You need to be comfortable and warm! I, too, have always dressed up for church (only started with dress pants in last 5 or so years and only half the time), but many wear jeans these days. Drives me crazy. My minis will not wear jeans as long as I buy the clothes. However, I do agree that God wants us for our hearts, not our wardrobe. Guess it's a respect thing with me. Stay warm!

  12. I would say that dress pants are completely appropriate. I would also say, that given the fact that you are pregnant, you can cut yourself some slack... slacks! LOL Pun totally intended there!

  13. I'm with you! I was also raised by a strict mother when it came to clothes and especially church attire! However, in the freezing months of January and february, I typically wear wool dress pants to Mass. If we attend Saturday services, which are very casual at our Parish, I will sometimes even wear chinos. I think God understands! :)

  14. For church I still go for a skirt or dress, but out come the cable knit wool tights and chunky sweaters over a skirt. Boots are ok I think, with think tights as well. And do not forget a husband with a warm jacket you can borrow during meetings!

  15. I would like to dress up for church but I have a really hard time finding cute affordable dress clothes, and it is sooo cold. This year my family has caved and we now wear jeans to church. Fortunately our church is casual sooo....

  16. I've been brought up to believe that the Bible tells us that women shouldn't wear pants. Also I believe it's wrong to wear tights or leggings because these have the same form factor and purpose as pants, ie they are bifurcated and cover the legs, so should not be worn by girls and women.

Yes, it can be cold in winter, but I would rather have cold legs than do something that I am convicted is immoral, and which my husband would not permit.

  17. Modesty is what God really wants. It is not what other people think sane or insane. Be modest in what you wear. Modesty in the heart and in your appearance. Stick with your parents because they are wiser.
