Saturday morning after the parade of boats, the largest freshwater race in the world commences. It's the
Chicago to Mackinac race. The boats leave on Saturday around 11:00 and some get into Mackinac (pronounced Mackinaw) Island as soon as Sunday night. In the past there have been plenty of years where the wind is dead, and they've arrived as late as Tuesday though! My uncle races each year, and as kids, we would all go up on Monday to pick him up off the boat and play around on the island for the day while the adults all watched the boats come in. It is an awesome day up there!
B and I are talking about going down to the Chicago Yacht Club on Sat to see the boats go off. We're not going out tonight, so we'll be up early to work out and get his run in. We'd like to hit the farmer's market in Lincoln Park and then drive further south to watch the boats. Wouldn't it be nice to sit outside in the sunshine on the grass with our pup and see all the pretty sails? I adore watching sailboat races! We're so lucky because next weekend is the Little Traverse Bay Regatta, and we'll be up north for a wedding, so we'll get to see more boat racing next weekend!
Sunday morning we're going to head to the driving range.............I haven't been in years, so we'll see how this goes! B's just excited that I want to go. We'll see how long that excitement lasts :)
What a pretty picture! Have fun :)

ReplyDeleteOoh, sounds fun. Maybe I'll see you on Sat! A picnic breakfast watching sailboats sounds fun!
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
sounds like a great weekend, have a wonderful time!
ReplyDeleteI hope your weekend was just wonderful! The race sounds great. I really need to get to Chicago sometime and see all that it has.
ReplyDeleteI used to work up on Mackinac Island a couple summers during college. July was superbusy during the Yacht Races. It's fun to watch them come under the Mackinac Bridge and pass Round Island Lighthouse. The weekend after the Chi-Mac is the Port Huron to Mackinac Yacht Race. This year there's even a race called the SuperMac where boats start off in Chicago, sail up to Mackinac and continue down Lake Huron to where ever the PH-M starting point is.
